Since spray foam restricts air movement through a building envelope (which results in energy savings!), having mechanical fresh air ventilation is especially important in spray foamed homes. Inadequate ventilation can increase indoor pollutant levels by not bringing in enough outdoor air to dilute emissions from indoor sources and by not carrying indoor air pollutants out of the home – this can lead to health problems.
Mechanical air ventilation systems provide filtration for indoor air and also allow a constant flow of outside air into the home.
There are a few types of ventilation systems:
- Exhaust: pull stale air out of the home & rely on make-up air leaking through structure (bathroom fans, range hoods etc.)
- Supply: pushes air into the home providing make-up air
- Balanced ventilation: uses one fan to bring air into the home and another to push it out
A house that’s insulated with spray foam and controlled with a ventilation system feels wonderful, has amazing air quality, and it saves money on energy bills.
