BROWNSBURG, IN -Rob Crawford, the founder and owner of MCC Equipment in Indianapolis, IN, is well-versed in the world of commercial coatings. As a highly respected supplier of plural component coatings equipment, Rob and his team at MCC are constantly in the field, providing technical equipment support to protective coatings applicators worldwide.

However, last spring, Rob faced a personal project: refurbishing his residential deck. This deck held special significance for Rob, serving as the gathering place for family parties and the centerpiece of entertainment at his beautiful Indianapolis home. Being aware of how Indiana’s weather can impact outdoor structures like wooden decks and concrete driveways, Rob had diligently maintained his deck using the familiar consumer product, Thompson’s Water Seal. Despite its popularity among DIY enthusiasts, Rob found that it didn’t quite deliver the desired results and required yearly reapplication to maintain any effectiveness.

Armed with his extensive knowledge of commercial coatings used in high-end industrial applications, Rob decided it was time to take a different approach. With access to top-notch technical expertise and state-of-the-art equipment used for applying industrial coatings, he sought to elevate his deck renovation to a new level.

Rob was determined to go “industrial” with his residential wooden deck, and that’s precisely what he did. One spring day, he embarked on the final transformation of his outdoor entertainment deck.

The first order of business was preparing the deck for the makeover. They followed a meticulous three-stage process involving a deck wash with a mixture of bleach and water, power washing, and sanding in key areas. Once the cleaning and preparation stage was complete, the areas slated for resealing were carefully taped off, and the application process began.

Drawing on his experience in the commercial protective coatings industry, Rob knew that only one supplier’s materials would suffice for this project: VersaFlex® Incorporated, a leading provider of polyurea protective coatings, joint sealants, and industrial concrete repair products. For the deck, Rob chose VersaFlex WB250 Waterborne Urethane Coating. This color-stable coating was applied in thin mil coats, with two light base coats followed by two heavier mil coats of WB250 clear mixed with 50% water. This application provided the deck with an outstanding wear surface, UV color stability, and a protective and visually appealing finish.

But Rob didn’t stop there. He decided to take the “industrial” approach even further for the rest of the deck, particularly the bar area. He opted for a pure polyurea coating called FSS 50DM from VersaFlex®. All the black-out panels were constructed using ½-inch blue board sprayed with the polyurea. For the bar top itself, Rob used ¾-inch plywood sprayed with VersaFlex FSS 45DC, another pure polyurea product, in a sleek gray color. To complete the bar top, he applied VersaFlex Aliphatic Clear Coat (ACC) mixed with fine grain black onyx, white calcium, gold spec, and brown spec. This custom mixture was then expertly sprayed through an air-operated gelcoat cup gun. Four coats were applied, with a wet sanding process in between, and the finishing touch involved two additional coats of ACC in a clear finish.

Four years have passed since the bar and deck received their industrial-strength coatings makeover, and they continue to shine as beautifully as the day they were finished. Despite enduring snowstorms, rain, shoveling, leaves, and routine yard maintenance, the bar and deck require little to no maintenance thanks to the robust protection provided by the commercial/industrial polyurea products from VersaFlex. According to Rob, with a touch of ingenuity and a cold beer in hand, there’s nothing that can’t be accomplished around the house.
